What
is SPIRITUALISM
Spiritualism exists as a religion,
science and philosophy that promotes communication
with those who live in the spirit world through
mediumship, together with healing and a belief in
God and natural law. It is based on the concept
that there is continuous life and that all those
who have passed on still live. It teaches personal
responsibility and that what man sows on Earth,
he reaps in the life to come, that man is a spiritual
being in a physical body for an experience on Earth
and that communion between the living and the dead
is proven through mediumship. Spiritualism is different
from Christianity in that God is not an omnipotent
being who watches over all of us but more of a positive
force in the universe. You can define 'him' in your
own way and this can be whoever or whatever you
want 'him' to be. Similarly, the figure of Jesus
is not seen as the saviour of the world but as one
of the greatest mediums who ever lived. In Spiritualist
churches, there is a regular service like other
religions but there are also significant differences.
A healing list is read before the congregation,
who are asked to focus their thoughts and to see
the people on the list in perfect health. The Declaration
of Principles is also read aloud before the lecture
which is usually about the applications of Spiritualism
to everyday life. Then, after the lecture there
is a message service where mediums are called upon
one at a time to give messages to people in the
congregation. Spiritualism is a continuous learning
experience. It acknowledges that there is still
much to learn about the spirit world and embraces
new ideas even if they contradict current thinking.
It is one of the few religions that is prepared
to ask 'why?' and admit to not knowing all the answers.
