UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

A Message from the President of

Spiritual Awakening Spiritualist Center

Dear Members and Friends,

As we step into the heart of summer, I’m reminded of the unique strength and warmth that comes from being part of a community that truly cares for one another. Our congregation is more than a place to gather — it’s a circle of support, shared values, and meaningful connections.

If you’ve been part of our family in the past, we warmly invite you to renew your membership and continue walking this journey with us. Your presence and participation help keep our community vibrant and welcoming for all.

For those who join us regularly but have not yet taken the step into membership, we encourage you to consider it. Membership is more than a formality — it’s a way to deepen your connection, have a voice in our shared future, and help shape the programs and outreach that make a difference in so many lives.

Let’s make this summer a season of renewed commitment, open hearts, and shared purpose. Together, we can continue to grow, support one another, and create a place where everyone feels they belong.

With gratitude and hope,

Michael

SPIRITUALISM AND SPIRITUALISTS:

Different insights into Spiritualism's Philosophy and Beliefs

Featured Article Contributed by Rev. Al Potts.

Many spiritualists were first introduced to religion through baptism into an Orthodox church. This often being a family tradition carried on through generations and still applies today. Many of the orthodox religions are built upon beliefs based on stories handed down over the ages and incorporated into a book and considered Divine teachings. Control of followers is thought to be the right of the leaders of these particular religions and in the past punishment was considered to be an accepted right.

In the early days of the 20th century young women who were ignorant of sexual behavior, when found to be with child, were sent away to places where they were treated with cruelty by the very people who were embedded in their own beliefs. The children were taken away from them and adopted, often by couples in faraway countries with no, or very little recorded information about their whereabouts. Secrecy was found to be acceptable by the hierarchy of the church. So we have the saying "THY WILL BE DONE," when it should have been, "MY WILL BE DONE."

We were often taught to do by the many religious leaders what was printed in their Holy Book. today, we have some people saying that politics and religion should be kept separate, and yet once again we have the power of some well-known religions controlling the voices of people as to how they should vote. Politics and religion have always walked hand in hand, and sometimes it can be hard to detect where the dividing line comes in. We have a brain which controls our thoughts and wishes, but that is on a physical level. The inner soul is the voice of the real you and I, and yet this questions our belief in Free Will, when told that we must follow ancient beliefs. Only in the silent

conditions of meditation we will touch the essence of our soul and open ourselves up to a greater knowledge.

The brain will cease to provide us with the answers to life once we have left this physical plane, so we must explore the options offered to us in the next phase of our spiritual development, when the soul moves on into the continuous phase of eternal life.

The Master Jesus taught his disciples to say His prayer and to understand that "Thy will be done is the way to follow, and that "My Will," is left at the end of our physical journey.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

.

Mediumship, as understood from the Spiritualist's point of view, is a gift afforded to everyone, no matter what their intelligence level may be. In fact, some of the least educated people mentioned in Spiritualist history books were of little too low education, and yet, gave some of the best evidential messages, using words and facts far beyond their intellect.

From the standpoint of Spiritualist philosophy, mediumship is considered a natural human faculty or "gift" rather than a supernatural phenomenon, though it is deeply interwoven with spiritual and moral dimensions. Spiritualists view the medium as a conduit for communication with the spirit world—comprising discarnate humans—through which moral, ethical, and often comforting messages can be transmitted to the living.

Core Aspects of Mediumship as a Gift

1 ). Natural, Not Supernatural (Nonsecular)

Mediumship operates according to natural laws, akin to biological or psychological sensitivities. These laws govern both material and spiritual phenomena.

Spiritualist doctrine emphasizes that the medium is an instrument; the "gift" lies in heightened sensitivity to subtle vibrations emanating from the spirit realm and is not inherently miraculous

2). Cultivation Through Study and Practice

Mediumship is not exclusively innate. Although some individuals display greater natural aptitude, Spiritualists hold that practice, ethical refinement, and moral development can enhance one's abilities.

Allan Kardec's Spiritist framework codifies this: mediums are trained in mental focus, meditation, and ethical conduct to responsibly transmit messages.

3). Ethical and Altruistic Responsibilities

Ethical practice is central: mediums are guided to use their abilities to aid others rather than for personal gain, emphasizing sincerity, humility, and altruism.

Messages from spirits are intended to encourage moral behavior, spiritual growth, and consolation for the bereaved

4 ). Forms of Mediumship

Mental Mediumship: Messages are received through clairvoyance, clairaudience, or clairsentience. Often referred to as "platform" mediumship, it includes telepathic-like reception.

Physical Mediumship: Involves producing tangible effects (e.g., levitation of objects, sounds) to demonstrate spirit presence, manifesting the gift in observable ways.

Trance Mediumship: A spirit temporarily occupies the medium’s body, communicating directly, emphasizing the medium’s role as vessel rather than originator

5). Supporting Evidence and Social Function

Spiritualists regard mediumistic phenomena as verifiable evidences of life after death rather than mystical miracles. This aligns the practice with empirically observable experiences accessible to human senses, bridging secular and religious interpretations

Mediumship also produces societal and therapeutic benefits, such as emotional support, reconciliation with grief, and the reinforcement of ethical responsibility among participants

Summary

From a Spiritualist perspective, mediumship is a natural human faculty—a gift that connects the living and the spirit world—operating according to discernible natural laws. It is nonsecular in the sense that the medium’s abilities, while spiritual in purpose, are grounded in natural sensitivities and human cognitive and sensory capacities. Ethical use, cultivation through practice, and transparent demonstration of evidence are essential to maintaining both personal integrity and societal trust in mediumistic practices.

Thus, mediumship is seen not as a mystical endowment (supernatural) but as a responsibly exercised gift, structured, teachable, and socially and morally meaningful.
