Message from the President of
Spiritual
Awakening Spiritualist Center
Dear
Members and Friends,
Happy
Easter.
This
year Easter Sunday falls on March 31st which also happens to
be the same day we celebrate the Birth of Modern-Day Spiritualism
(1848). These 2 dates haven't occurred together since 2013, and
only 7 times since Modern-Day Spiritualism began 176 years ago. A little
bit of trivia I thought you would like to know.
But
seriously, I am often asked why Spiritualists celebrate Easter. Especially
as it is a Christian festival and cultural holiday. Put simply, Christians
celebrate the resurrection and new life. For Spiritualists, Easter is
a time of renewal. It prompts reflection on the promise of eternal life.
So, it is fitting that these two anniversaries fall on the same day
every so often as a reminder that Life is eternal. Christians have their
faith. Spiritualists continue to bring forth proof through mediumship
that eternal life is a truth.
This
April I hope will bring you peace in your life as you look around and
see nature proving yet once again that life is eternal. Just as the
4 seasons have their place in the cycle of life. So, we too have our
season here on earth and many seasons still to come in Spirit.
We
will be taking a break from Workshops during April. Please make a note
of the 2 coming up in May though.
We
are still looking to find a new place for our church spiritual center.
At the Directors Board meeting in March, we agreed to step up our efforts
and find somewhere suitable as soon as possible. We are extending our
search to enlist our members and friends at Spiritual Awakening to help
us look. As Confucius said: 'Many hands make light work'. Please let
us know if you see or hear of anything that you think would be suitable.
If you've been to any of our locations in the past for events and services,
you'd have a good idea of the sort of thing we're looking for. Just
let us know and we'll follow up any suggestions . Thank you!

of 'Modern-Day Spiritualism': March 31st, 1848

into the fascinating world of Spiritualism and the intriguing
connection between Andrew Jackson Davis and the Fox Sisters.
|
The
Fox Sisters: Spiritualism’s Mysterious Beginnings
|
In
the mid-19th century, in a farmhouse in Hydesville, New York,
two young girls—Margaretta “Maggie” Fox (14) and her sister
Kate (11)—experienced a peculiar phenomenon. Every night, they
heard mysterious raps on the walls and furniture, seemingly
with an otherworldly intelligence. Their mother, Margaret, conducted
experiments, asking the unseen presence to count, reveal ages,
and more. The Fox family eventually left the haunted house,
but the story didn’t end there.

Andrew
Jackson Davis: The Prophet of American Spiritualism
|
|
|
Andrew
Jackson Davis, an early magnetist, bridged the gap between mesmerism
and Spiritualism. He prophesied the coming of spirits to the
Fox Sisters and detailed the progressive creation and spiritual
evolution of the world through trance revelations. His ideas
gained credibility when he witnessed the sisters’ abilities,
further fueling the rise of Modern Spiritualism as a religious
alternative.
The
movement known as Modern Spiritualism emerged from several revolutionary
philosophies and characters, including Davis and the Fox Sisters.
It left a lasting impression on 19th-century America, drawing
prominent figures into its ranks and challenging conventional
beliefs

| Andrew
Jackson Davis (August 11, 1826 – January 13, 1910) was an American
Spiritualist, born in Blooming Grove, New York. He was the son of
a shoemaker and had little formal education. From the age of 14,
Davis claimed to be able to diagnose illnesses via clairvoyance. |
In
1843, he attended lectures on animal magnetism, the precursor
of hypnotism, in Poughkeepsie, and began to perceive himself as
having remarkable clairvoyant powers. The following year, he received
spiritual messages that outlined his life’s work1. He described
himself as "the Poughkeepsie Seer.
For
three years (1844–1847), he practiced magnetic healing, a form
of therapy regarded as pseudoscience. In 1847, he published
“The Principles of Nature, Her Divine Revelations, and a Voice
to Mankind”, which he had dictated while in a trance to his
scribe, William Fishbough1. He returned to writing books after
lecturing with little success, publishing about 30 in all. Davis
was much influenced by Emanuel Swedenborg and the Shakers. His
work left a lasting impression on the field of Spiritualism
and continues to be studied by those interested in the intersection
of religion, science, and the supernatural.

SPIRITUALISM

As April rapidly comes in, the appearance of what was thought
to be dead starts to show new life, appearing through the
hard winter ground. Spring begins to welcome new life through
plants, baby lambs, birds eggs breaking within the nests and
all new beginnings bursting into life. God's great creation
confirms to us that all life is continuous, from the lowest
to the highest levels of consciousness.

|
Most
religions speak of the continuation of life in different ways,
reincarnation being either accepted by spiritualists or otherwise.
Christians believe Jesus proved that he survived after physical
death by his appearance three days later after he was crucified.
Mary Magdalene went to the tomb where Jesus was laid after his
crucifixion, and finding the stone rolled away, and the tomb
empty, runs to find Peter and John. Crying, she turns and sees
Jesus but thinks he is the gardener, but soon realises that
it is Jesus. However,
Christians are generally unsure if survival after physical death
applies to all human life.

All
religions have varied views on whether we die or live to eternity.
Nature has its way of showing us that nothing actually dies,
and confirms it through the beauty of nature showing its face
even after the most difficult of earthly conditions.
Spiritualism
tells us that the Soul continues to learn and grow through
the different levels of consciousness, and that eternal life
is guaranteed for all. So, we can see at this time of the
year that eternal life is for all of God's creation and that
there is no such thing as death.

Let
us then celebrate Easter, as the story of Jesus proved to us
that life is eternal for all. Let us marvel at all of the Great
Spirit of Life's creation in its many and varied forms, and
let us make an effort to preserve God's perfection so that this
world will continue to be enjoyed by all in the future. Have

THE
TEACHINGS OF SILVER BIRCH

The Wisdom
of Silver Birch
Silver
Birch is arguably the most famous guide and prolific teacher
in the history of Spiritualism. Though presenting himself as
a North American Indian the wisdom of this timeless master transcends
both history and culture.
The
philosophy of Silver Birch was channeled over an incredible
61 years by trance medium and founder of Psychic News, Maurice
Barbanell.
Silver
Birch not only provides us with a comprehensive description
of the Spirit realm and its relation to the material plane we
temporarily call home, his words also provide a blueprint for
living a purposeful and ultimately satisfying life.

The
message of Silver Birch is an excellent introduction for newcomers
to Spiritualism, an ongoing source of inspiration for established
Spiritualists, and food for thought for even the most hardened
skeptics.

The Spirit World
Silver
Birch made it clear that the spirit world is not “dreamy or nebulous.”
Spirits are busy with activities just as they are in the physical
world. In the spirit world, the mental is real and the physical
is a shadow. For example, when one dreams, things seem real at
the time. The dream only becomes ethereal when the person wakes
up.

Healing
He
emphasized that the Great Spirit, the apex of love and wisdom
and compassion, provides everyone with the opportunity to find
themselves and begin to live, not in superstition, ignorance,
or darkness, but in the full light of knowledge, with serenity
and confidence as their constant companions.
