VOICES FROM THE PAST

SPIRITUALISM: YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW

Certainly! The spiritualist movement attracted a diverse array of individuals, including some well-known figures who believed in communicating with the dead. Let’s explore a few of them:

Thomas Edison:

Thomas Edison: The brilliant inventor Thomas Edison is famous for inventing the phonograph in 1877. Interestingly, the first record he created on the phonograph was of his own voice reciting the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” In 1920, Edison announced plans to create a “spirit phone” capable of communicating with the deceased. Although some believe this was a joke or a way to capitalize on spiritualism’s popularity, Edison’s interest in the supernatural was genuine. He aimed to demonstrate that science, rather than mediums and Ouija boards, could bridge the gap between the living and the spirit world

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: The creator of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was deeply interested in spiritualism. He actively supported the movement and believed in the possibility of communicating with spirits. Doyle wrote extensively on the subject, advocating for spiritualism and investigating psychic phenomena. His influence helped lend credibility to the movement

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle:

Sir Oliver Sir Oliver LodgeLodge:

A distinguished scientist, Sir Oliver Lodge, also embraced spiritualism. He conducted experiments and research related to mediumship and spirit communication. Lodge’s involvement added scientific weight to spiritualist claims, and he contributed significantly to the movement’s credibility

Hannen Swaffer: The journalist Hannen Swaffer was another notable figure who believed in spiritualism. His writings and public support helped raise awareness and interest in the movement. Swaffer’s contributions highlighted spiritualism’s impact on popular culture and society

Hannen Swaffer:

William Butler Yeats:

The Irish poet William Butler Yeats explored spiritualism through “automatic writings.” These were messages supposedly channeled from spirits through writing without conscious control. Yeats’s engagement with spiritualism influenced his poetry and artistic expression

Arnold Schoenberg: The avant-garde composer Arnold Schoenberg delved into spiritualism, creating what was known as “New Music.” His exploration of unconventional musical forms and ideas was influenced by spiritualist concepts

Arnold Schoenberg:

These figures, among others, contributed to the rich tapestry of spiritualism, shaping cultural expression and challenging conventional beliefs about life, death, and the afterlife.

SPIRITUALISM AND SPIRITUALISTS - What we Believe:

Featured Article Contributed by Rev. Al Potts.

May each day of the week be a good day
May the Lord always watch over you
And may all of your hopes turn to wishes
And may all of your wishes come true.......

These few words are from a lovely song sung by Andy Williams a few years ago but resonate with us every day of our lives. In May we think of the many promises we made a few months ago, when a fresh New Year came upon us, but how quickly they have gone from our memory. Our wishes are many, some for ourselves, some for the planet and some for those near and dear to us. So many promises are made, but where is the dedication in Spiritualism to make sure that this wonderful truth continues.

After the first World War when many men were killed and people rushed to get a communication from their deceased family member, Spiritualism reached the pinnacle of its popularity. As with many other religions there were many changes ahead and religions took on a new meaning. Spiritualism moved in the direction of mental mediumship and cast aside the philosophy in favour of a quick message, failing to include the greatest mediumship of all, HEALING. Many churches do offer Healing but it usually lasts about 15 minutes per patient, and isn't given the time it deserves.
Emma Hardinge Britten said in 1868, "If spiritualism is to advance beyond it's phenomenal facts to the dignity of a philosophy or the inspiration of a religion, it must not lose sight of its harmonious relation to its phenomena, not descend from its lofty vantage ground of knowledge, into the vale of misty theory". What does that mean? We must continue to present the important philosophy and message of spiritualism through the true facts that have been propagated within modern day spiritualism. Beginning with the Fox sisters in Hydesville New York State in 1848 and that of people like Emanuel Swedenborg 1688 - 1772 and Andrew Jackson Davis 1826 - 1910. Andrew Jackson Davis said" Truth is the ultimate knowledge, it's the beginning, middle and end of all inquiry. It is the source of all eternal realities, it's unchangeable, the same yesterday, today and forever, and always universal in its application.
How we understand truth is what we want it to be, how we perceive the knowledge. To get at truth we must rid our minds of all preconceptions and conditions and trust our intuition. Intuition is the deepest source of truth: it is the genius of the soul.
After the first World War when many men were killed and people rushed to get a communication from their deceased family member, it reached the pinnacle of its popularity. As with many other religions there were many changes ahead and religions took on a new meaning. Spiritualism moved in the direction of mental mediumship and cast aside the philosophy in favor of a quick message, failing to include the greatest mediumship of all, HEALING. Many churches do offer Healing, but it usually lasts about 15 minutes per patient, and isn't given the time it deserves.

What is sadly missing in today's churches in the dedication which was so visible up until the pandemic. Spiritualism offers us all the necessary tools to create a wonderful life and fulfills all of our needs and aspirations. Let us then take our religion of Spiritualism, make it a big part of our lives by reaching out to inspire those who have no leading light in their dark world, and let us be more than a name on the church board, but an acting member, dedicated to the furtherance of our church and our religion of Spiritualism.

THE TEACHINGS OF SILVER BIRCH

The Wisdom of Silver Birch

Silver Birch is arguably the most famous guide and prolific teacher in the history of Spiritualism. Though presenting himself as a North American Indian the wisdom of this timeless master transcends both history and culture.

The philosophy of Silver Birch was channeled over an incredible 61 years by trance medium and founder of Psychic News, Maurice Barbanell.

Silver Birch not only provides us with a comprehensive description of the Spirit realm and its relation to the material plane we temporarily call home, his words also provide a blueprint for living a purposeful and ultimately satisfying life.

The message of Silver Birch is an excellent introduction for newcomers to Spiritualism, an ongoing source of inspiration for established Spiritualists, and food for thought for even the most hardened skeptics.

On The Spirit World

Silver Birch made it clear that the spirit world is not “dreamy or nebulous.” Spirits are busy with activities just as they are in the physical world. In the spirit world, the mental is real and the physical is a shadow. For example, when one dreams, things seem real at the time. The dream only becomes ethereal when the person wakes up.

On Healing

He emphasized that the Great Spirit, the apex of love and wisdom and compassion, provides everyone with the opportunity to find themselves and begin to live, not in superstition, ignorance, or darkness, but in the full light of knowledge, with serenity and confidence as their constant companions.

'QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS' by Silver Birch

Every Month we will post a different Question which was Asked and Answered by Silver Birch

Silver Birch was asked:

A spirit view of God: We are told that God knows when a sparrow falls. How is it possible for God to know all that ......

He replied:

"That which is called God is the natural Law of the universe. The Great Spirit is within everything. Everything is the Great Spirit. Because the soul knows itself, the Great spirit knows the soul. Because the sparrow is the Great Spirit, the Great Spirit knows the sparrow. Because the Great Spirit is the trembling leaf, the trembling leaf is the Great Spirit.

Throughout the whole of your world and mine, throughout the universe, even in worlds which are not yet known to you, the laws of the Great spirit reign supreme. Nothing happens outside those laws; therefore, all is known because all comes within the compass of natural law, which is the Great Spirit."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Scientists can't decide if consciousness is real or fake

What if everything in our world has a soul and mind? What if every desk, chair, and potted plant has a conscious stream of thoughts? That's the basic idea behind Panpsychism, a theory first put forward in the late 16th century by Francesco Patrizi. It's been a hundred years or so since science won out about this theory in the 1920s, but now it's regaining momentum.

To understand why this theory is regaining popularity requires us to look at one of the most difficult conundrums that human scientists have ever faced: where consciousness comes from. Scientists have been trying to solve this hard problem for over a hundred years, and while developments in neuroscience, psychology, and quantum physics have come far, we still don't have a definitive answer.

The argument is regaining momentum, though, thanks in part to the work of Italian neuroscientist and psychiatrist Giulio Tononi, who proposed the idea that there is widespread consciousness even found in the simplest of systems. Tononi and American neuroscientist Christof Koch argued that consciousness will follow where there are organized lumps of matter. Some even believe that the stars may be conscious.

This basic idea, then, seems to suggest that grouped lumps of matter, like the very chair you're sitting in right now, may have a stream of consciousness. Of course, not everyone agrees with this. Many still take the stance that this is just an attempt to grasp at straws, if you will, in a bid to understand consciousness and how it comes to be.

The main idea behind Panpsychism seems to rely on the belief that if brains are not required for consciousness, then anything can be conscious of its existence, and thus, everything has different experiences. But there are more than just the believers and unbelievers here. There are actually some who believe that consciousness is all an illusion, which raises even more questions.

Keith Frankish, an honorary professor of philosophy at the University of Sheffield, told Popular Mechanics that he believes that consciousness is just an illusion of our own minds. Whether or not the very stars are conscious has yet to be proven, of course. And we're still a long way from understanding the brain and how it correlates to different things within our world.

This is still an area of science that draws a lot of big question marks from scientists. All you can really say for sure is what you believe. Are you conscious? Or is consciousness just an illusion that your brain has conjured up? It is certainly an interesting thought.
